ECOWAS TO NIGERIA, RESPECT FREE TRADE AGREEMENT, OPEN BORDERS

Nigeria has drawn international attention for closing all its land borders against its neighbors in Africa. At the 2nd extraordinary session of ECOWAS parliament, a call was made to Nigeria to open its borders.

For years, there have have been free movement of goods and people through the border but Nigeria now thinks that the porous border is responsible for the high rate of smuggling in the country.

Most products such as food items, machines, cars and other materials used in Nigeria are imported.

The Nigerian government believes that it loses billions of dollars to smugglers yearly because they are imported mainly from Europe into neighboring African countries then transported through the borders to Nigeria which is considered as Africa's largest market.

All manner of products are imported into those countries, they are made to pay duties and taxes to the government of those nations but when they are smuggled into Nigeria, the Nigerian government does not receive any revenue from them.

The free movement of those goods into Nigeria according to reports is harming the local industry, so the government decided to close the borders.

Although Nigeria has not offered any response to the call made at the 2nd extraordinary session of the ECOWAS parliament in Liberia, there is likely to be no change in the country's policy with regards to border movement.
