There was widespread jubilation across the country when Governor Seyi Makinde the new Oyo State governor declared a free education in the state. Many people praised him for doing what most state governors would not dare to do.
He even scrapped the PTA fees that were being paid by school pupils across the state. Why jubilation is still going on about his free-education policy, some people were calling him the new Awolowo.
However, inquiring minds have observed with dismay the fact that the governor has no structured plan to successfully run a free education in Oyo State.
It was realized that before the coming of the governor, pupils were paying N3,700 as the Parent Teachers Asociation (PTA) level. The levy was used by the PTA administrators to employ teachers who were lacking in the state. These teachers are usually known as PTA teachers.
But with the scrapping of the fee, those teachers are now jobless and one can categorically say that the problem of lack of teachers is fully back in Oyo State.
With Makinde’s free education, pupils are not certain of having a quality education because there are no plans to recruit more teachers to fill the large void
