Following the news of the disbanding of the Economic team headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, there have been speculations that the presidency may have decided to limit the influence of the Vice President of Nigeria in Buhari’s government ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Osinbajo has maintained his loyalty to President Buhari despite speculations that he has not been carried along in key activities of the government because he is considered as Tinubu's ally.
Buhari's ill health and subsequent protracted medical leave abroad may have given Osinbajo the chance to make some impact especially in the confirmation of the appointment of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onoghen who was later controversially removed over corruption allegations by Buhari.
Osinbajo’s role as the head of the economic team gave him a general oversight on Buhari’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan which led to his reelection in 2019. But Buhari has scrapped the group and replaced it with an advisory council whose members though professionals are considered as politicians.
Prof Charles Soludo who was a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is a member of that advisory council.
Some analysts say that he is still a card-carrying member of APGA. This has raised fears in the APC camp especially of loyalists of the Vice President as to the political calculations on the way to 2023.
Osinbajo has also dismissed claims that he was been stripped of his influence in the government of Muhammadu Buhari who seems to be basking in good health and strength.
He stated that Buhari gave approval to all his economic policies as the head of the economic team and that there is nothing wrong if he had to seek approval from the president or his aides on certain issues under agencies controlled by him.
