The rivalry between Chief Godswill Akpabio and Ekpeyong has been described by many people as a bitter one that goes beyond politics. Ekpeyong the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections for Akwaibom Northwest senatorial district, defeated Akpabio of the APC to secure his ticket to the red chamber.
However, Ekpeyong has published a congratulatory message to Akpabio when he was made the minister of the Nigeria Delta by President Buhari. An action that was praised by even his critics.
When Ekpeyong recently lost his wife many people expected that Akpabio will sympathize with him but he never did.
Akpabio did not show up at the funeral and he failed to send a message of sympathy despite the Ekpeuong show of concern for him.
People now think that the Akpabio is bitter after unexpectedly losing his senatorial election to the PDP candidate. He has also lost at the tribunal to reclaim his mandate which he insisted was rigged.
The politics of bitterness played by Godswill Akpabio is blamed on the purported promise of the APC that he will be made the senate president upon his defection to the APC but his failure to win the election made the promise elusive.
