The minister of labor and employment Dr Chris Ngige has warned the organized labor which consist of the Nigerian Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress not to insist on the full implementation of the new minimum wage for workers in Nigeria.
The federal government had commenced the implementation of the new minimum wage for some workers but it insisted that it cannot meet up with a full implementation.
Organized labor has continued to mount pressure on the federal comment to fully implement the new minimum wage but the minister of labor has announced that there are implications for labor demand.
He noted that a full implementation of the minimum wage will lead to a mass sack of workers.
According to him about N580bn is required to meet up with the payment annually and the governmemt does not have the funds so downsizing of the workforce appears as the only option if labout insist on aq full implementation.
There are fears that the approach of the government to the issue may lead to further crises between Organized labor and government representatives involved in negotiations.
The government has vehemently stated that it does not have enough resources for a full implementation of the new minimum wage.
