Representatives of the United Nations Environmental Project (UNEP) has heavily criticized the federal government of Nigeria for its handling of the Ogoni Cleanup, a project initiated in 2016 by the presidency as part of its campaign promise.
The government had awarded contracts to c=some companies but work is yet to fully commence as te environmental issues caused by oil spills still confront the people and the international community in the face.
Many international organizations had volunteered to assist Nigeria to achieve the noble project but it seems like the project is gradually becoming an abandoned one despite heavy politicization of the issue to score political points.
The Hydrocarbon Restoration Project members addressed the representatives of UNEP claiming that procurement has been the greatest challenge to the execution of the project.
This was explained by Godswill Akpabio the minister of the Niger Delta who claims that the government is doing everything possible to hasten the procurement process so that the project can begin.
