The Nigerian border may remain closed for two
years according to a speech delivered by the governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele. The borders were closed some months ago due to
smuggling activities.
The Nigerian
government may have something bigger under its sleeve for closing the borders.
It has even attributed the decreased rate of banditry in the country to the
border closure.
It implies that the
government believes that closing the border is a security measure. The
Comptroller General of Customs Hameed Ali had given a very different version of
the story claiming that the borders were closed to promote local industry and
stop dumping of harmful products into Nigeria.
At the convocation
ceremony of the Edo State University Iyamho, Auchi was he was a speaker, he
maintained that banditry will be a thing of the past if te borders remained
closed for 2 years.
