No fewer than 20 Obas
have lost their crowns and positions after the governor of Oyo State, Seyi
Makinde. Many people have interpreted the move as a retaliatory one against
former governor Abiola Ajimobi.
Amosun had created the over 20 Oba traditional stools in the build-up to
the governorship election in the state. Many people criticized the creation of
new Obas as a political move ahead of the governorship election which Ajimobi’s
candidate lost.
According to current Governor Seyi Makinde, the creation of the new Obas
was unconstitutional and therefore he sought their dissolution.
While some Oyo residents see Makinde as trying to reform the state and
bring about massive development, others see him as a vindictive person seeking
to score cheap political points by tarnishing the achievements of his
predecessors.
