The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice Abubakar Malami has ordered the release of a former National Security Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan Sambo Dasuki and revolution now convener Omoyele Sowore.
The government came under heavy pressure and threat of protest from January 1st if it fails to comply with court judgments that ordered their release.
Also, the decision to order their release came as a shock to Nigerians who have given up on their release. The case of Col Sambo Dasuki was even more complicated because he had been in custody since 2015.
However, there are fears that the directive may not be complied with because Malami stated that the prosecutors have the right to challenge the bail granted to them in court.
This is because supporters of their continuous detention argue that treasonable crimes should not be allowed bail.
