Jungle
justice is a form of the illegal justice system where the death sentence is
summarily passed on accused persons without any trial or investigation. It is
often perpetrated by mobs who often disperse before law enforcement agencies
arrive at the scene.
Now and then photos of
people who have been burnt to death or lynched trend on social media, some are
even found in newspapers and written by well-respected persons and journalists
but no serious action has been taken to stop the barbaric practice.
Moral experts all over
the world have not been able to find any moral justification for jungle justice
which issues the brute sentence on the slightest moral failings.
In Nigeria, incidents
of jungle justice happen mostly in big cities like Lagos, Abuja and many other
places where a lot of youths roam about doing nothing due to lack of jobs.
Scenes of such criminal
acts are usually horrifying and may have negative implications on the social well being of the people.
It is high time that
Nigerians begin to build a perspective on the issue of jungle justice so that
relevant laws can help tackle the menace.
