Marriage
in Christianity permits the fulfilling of some traditional rights such as
payment of bride price and dowry. But when it comes to church weddings, there
are various perspectives to it depending on the denomination.
A marriage ceremony is
one event that nearly every Nigerian plan towards because of its huge financial
implication. At is why Nigerians were mindful of a new law soon to be
introduced which stipulates the payment of certain amounts of money.
Churches will be
required to pay the some of N30,000 according to the reports to get a license
from the government to be able to carry out valid marriage ceremonies.
Newly married couples
will also pay a fee to their church to get marriage ceremonies done.
Most people who reacted
to the news described it as the government's taxation policy meant to create more
hardship for the common man.
It was even reported
that the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) was one of the key Christian
body that has criticized the policy.
However, it is not
clear whether the policy was being contemplated or whether there are plans to
enforce it on a later date.
