The
senator and former governor of Anambra State Chief Orji Uzor Kalu hs currently
facing trial at the federal high court in Lagos for fraud amounting to about
N7.65b.
He was dragged to court
along with the Slok group, his company which allegedly facilitated the fraud.
The anti-corruption body which is handling his case seems to have concluded
investigations and has left the mater to the court to decide.
The alleged fraud was
said to have been committed when he was the governor of Abia state.
Like former Governor
Joshua Dariye, Orji Uzor Kalu may serve as a senator from prison if he is
eventually convicted of the crime.
He will not be the
first senator to face such treatment as some former governors who were serving
senators also suffered the same fate.
His rising political
profile will also be affected as he is currently the chief whip of the Senate.
There are also indications that he may be a top contender in the 2023
presidential race.
It is still uncertain
whether he might resign to fate or appeal the judgment in court to avoid any
further damage to his reputation.
