There was a war of
words after President Muhammadu Buhari announced that he will stand down as
Nigeria's president in 2023. Supporters of the president saw that as the
president's way of dispelling rumors that he plans to give a third term in
office.
But for members of the
opposition, the statement meant that Buhari felt that he was doing Nigerians a
favor by standing down rather than obeying the constitution.
According to the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Buhari must step down in 2023 after the
expiration of his tenure because it is not in his power to choose whether to
remain in office or stand down.
The stamen by the
president is timely because of the growing call by some northerners for the
president to have a third term in office because of his goodwill towards
Nigerians.
