The news about plans by South Africa's retail giant, Shoprite, to leave Nigeria trended on Twitter in the early hours of Monday, with mixed reactions and debate over the possible cause of the company's decision. While the argument was still raging, Shoprite Nigeria came out to debunk the news, saying "We are not leaving, who leaves over a $30billion investment and close shop? It doesn’t sound right.
“We only gave this opportunity to Nigeria investors to come in and also help drive our expansion plan in Nigeria. So we are not leaving."
With this disclaimer, Shoprite has therefore put a stop to various accusations and counter accusations that initially dotted the social media space.
